Local Seasonal Fruits & Veg: September 2013

What’s so great about eating local, seasonal produce? Oh, let me count the ways. Local means it hasn’t traveled as far which means less fuel and more nutrients. Did you know that fresh fruits and veggies start losing nutrients as soon as they are picked? Seasonal means that you can grow it naturally, outside. Less electricity, more nutrients. Finally, support your local farmers, man! Farming is a noble, intelligent, beautiful profession. Let’s keep it that way.

Thanks to Sean the produce dude at Whole Foods Market – Interbay, I have compiled for you a list of local, in-season produce you can buy during the month of September. And, with this delicious autumnal chill in the air, how will you resist tangy apples, sweet squash, and earthy greens?

  • Stone fruit (peaches, plums,  nectarines, Pluots and Apriums) in early September
  • Apples
  • Pears
  • Greens
  • Lettuces
  • Carrots
  • Hard squash later in September

Let me know what you have found, in your garden, at the farmers market, or the grocery store! I’d love to hear from you.
